Professor Henri-Charles Dubourguier (06.02.1948-11.03.2010) was an outstanding professor of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. In France, prof. Dubourguier was the Scientific Director at the INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research) of Lille (1981-1988). He was the Deputy Director of IAAL (Institut Agricole et Alimentaire de Lille) and the professor of microbiology at the University of Lille. From 1993 to 2008 he worked in the Institut Supérieur d’Agriculture of Lille as a professor of environmental sciences.
In 2004, prof. Dubourguier was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. In 2006, he started his work as a professor at EMU and the following year he established and began to lead the Biogas Laboratory in EMU. In 2008, he moved permanently to Estonia and continued as a professor at EMU and a Leading Scientist in the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics (NICPB, Tallinn) in the Laboratory of Environmental Toxicology (led by Dr. Anne Kahru) until his death.
Prof. Dubourguier’s daily work played a significant role in increasing the EMU’s visibility and competence in several essential scientific fields (environmental protection, renewable energy, sustainable development, internationalization of studies). He had a leading role in the initiation of and participation in many international seminars, cooperation and research projects. He was the main supervisor of 4 PhD students at EMU. In NICPB, he was the initiator of several new scientific approaches and projects and an enthusiastic motivator for the students of the Lab of Environmental Toxicology.
Even now, prof. Dubourguier’s scientific productivity and achievements are highly reflected in the scientific statistics of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. According to ISI-ESI, he is among the 1% of the most-cited researchers in the field in environmental sciences and ecology worldwide, crossing the threshold of the scientific field (711, from 2006 to 2016) more than by 50%. Four of the papers, co-authored by prof. Dubourguier, are highly cited (ISI-ESI). Furthermore, his former PhD students and current NICPB researchers Margit Heinlaan and Villem Aruoja now supervise their own PhD students and Margit Heinlaan is among the 1% of the top cited scientists.
